Hi,
This is my first review of a product and the only reason i’m writing it is so that you don’t make the same mistake as me in buying it!
Start With The DVD
Up-scaling is a bit hyped and you don’t really benefit from it except that if you use a HDMI lead and then the picture will be a little sharper, if you are going to use scart lead then just stick with a a normal player.
There are several problems with the DVD but in breif;
* Where are the normal DVD-features? On-screen progress bar, info regarding part length, angle selection, in movie-sound select, etc etc.
As for the media player, yes it connects without any problems and see your media files, but that’s where the fun stops! The interface is just text based!, very slow even using a wired network! and so dated! – I had a pinicale media centre over two years ago and it was a lot more advanced than this.
Also;
* FWD/RWD in HD WMV does not work. Picture stalls and player needs a reset.
* No MKV container –> this should be implemented since specifications state HD and MKV is open source and a HD variant.
* CD-ISO support for my backed-up Holiday DVDs?
* Better picture slideshow transitions
* Play music during slideshow
* Faster buffering on internet radio
If you are unsure look around for the forum even on linksys website people are unhappy with it, so if you can afford to spend a little more then look at another media player the xbox 360 has a great media player built in and Netgear have a new media player out as well, for me anything but this.

To start with, a small clarification, this unit is not a DVD recorder. It comes with Nero Recode which allows you to convert non-copyright DVDs to Nero digital files to store on your PC. The important thing to note here is non-copyright; don’t expect to RIP your own purchased DVD’s if they have copyright protection.
The good points:
It supports a decent number of video formats, including Xvid, Divx, WMV and Digital Nero. I have had no problems playing most of my videos. I also had no issues playing MP3′s or displaying JPEG’s.
It’s easy to set up and personally I have had no issues with networking speed but I’m using the Ethernet port at 100MB rather than wireless.
It just plugs and plays using its own rather basic sharing software (see bad points), but I have successfully accessed content on my PC using several other media sharing services.
You can update the firmware online, let’s hope that some improvements come soon.
The Bad points:
The interface is a basic text list as mentioned in another review; it really needs some work from Linksys.
The media sharing software that is shipped with the unit only sorts your content by folders, and you need to be logged onto the PC with it running to access the files. I’m now using TwonkeyMedia to access my files, it’s far superior, and I don’t need to log on to the PC as it runs as a service.
Fast forwarding some videos past 8x speed can lock the unit and it needs to be reset to recover. Those that do fast forward at the maximum of 32x need a few seconds whilst the video is buffered.
When playing DVD’s, the player doesn’t remember where the disc has gotten up to when you stop it, requiring a bit of chapter jumping to get back it where you were.
Overall:
It’s potentially a very good player, but Linksys need to write some new firmware for it to really improve the interface. It’s also much better when used with other Media Sharing software. It has an HDMI interface and digital audio connectors for 5.1 support, but I have yet to try these.
This is a unit for the more technically competent, who aren’t too fused about the interface and want a unit with more media support and thats cheaper than the AppleTV box.

This is by far the best gadget I have bought so far. Was looking for a means of sending mp3 and avi direct from my computer to my tv/amp via wireless in a different room.
The house I am in has very thick walls and I was concerned however, I have a very good signal and getting good quality avi files and mp3 direct to tv. No flickering and very easy to install. Recommend this item.

I bought the KISS1600 to access my pictures and videos from my NAS. It does it very well, very stable, play fine any files I’ve tried. I have tried different players and so far, this one is definitively the best.
The user interface is easy to understand and you can stream your files from your PC as well.
Funny one: I have a Nokia N95 and I can take pictures with my phone and the phone can find my KISS1600 and then I can see my picture straight on my TV. Really cool.
I think this device is the most stable in its category, and it really can play lots of format, from standard Def to HD. A very good catch!

I think the user reviews for this product are either 1 star or 5 stars. You either got it working or one that works or you didnt. Lucky for me I did and as the title says it works a treat.
It connected first time to my wireless network and, based on some reviews, I fired up my first XVid file with trepidation. Within 5 seconds it was playing fine, I have found this with all files I have tried so far (none of this 45 second wait). The box itself has frozen a couple of times when switching from SkyHD and back with both boxes connected via HDMI but when I upgraded the firmware this stopped.
The firmware upgrade also greatly improved the search facility which is fine after a short pause and now goes up to 32x. There is some criticism of the menu interface and it is a bit basic looking but it works and as long as your files are stored and named well this isnt too much of a problem.
Pros:
Quick to install, easy to use and it works.
Cons:
No way of browsing to a specific point in time in a given file (i.e. start playing at a specified point).
Not very good support of ID3 tags on MP3s – doesnt bother me as I have a squeezebox but this does undermine its “multi-media” pretensions.
Image viewing and slide show a bit ropey but again I didnt buy it for this.
Interface could be a bit nicer.
